Remix (Youth Music Action Zone)

When the hip hop subculture was still in its infancy, a South Bronx DJ and ex-gang leader named Afrika Bambaataa started a crew/organisation which he named the Mighty Zulu Nation. The Zulu Nation is still going strong some 30 years later and continues to adhere to its original aims of using hip hop as a force for positive change for young people, through education in the creative arts of MCing, Djing, breakdancing, and graffiti.

This was my inspiration for starting to work as a youth arts workshop facilitator a few years ago, after working as a youth worker in Bristol for five years (and running a project in St.Paul's, in Bristol, for three years).

Building young people's confidence through creativity and allowing them to harness the power of their imaginations helps them to learn about themselves and to grow as people in an informal educational setting.

Graffiti (and hip hop in general) was a vital part of my own creative and personal development and it is the passion I feel for it that drives me to do the work I do now. My time as a youth worker gave me the confidence to branch out on my own and gave me a firm base of experience to build on.

On the sub pages contained in this section you will find examples of the wide variety of projects that I have worked on, in schools and youth centres across the South West of England.
